Health Tips in a Down Economy
I am an optimist. While I fully acknowledge some hard times are upon us, I am optimistic that the economy will rebound, and perhaps quicker than anyone thought. That is my hope, and my prayers will help make it so God willing. We Americans are a resilient lot, resourceful, and innovative. That said, we could be facing food shortages this coming summer. Not so much due to the economy, but the 3 year drought that California is dealing with has already led to many farmers not planting their usual early crops. At the time of this article, California snow pack in the Sierra Mountains is at 61% of normal levels, and we are already in a drought with many state reservoirs at one-third of normal levels. By estimates California supplies 80% of U.S. produce. Given the impending water rationing state officials say will be coming later this year, it may be prudent to take a look at the practical aspect of either expanding or starting a vegetable garden. I am certain we will see at least some food items simply unavailable, or at a minimum being offered at higher, even exorbitant prices. One more thing that I really do not have an answer for. I saw a news piece the other night on dairy farming. Since the price of milk has fallen, at least what a farmer is paid for per gallon, a lot of dairy farms are struggling, selling off cows at a loss, or simply going out of business. That may bring milk shortages that take a year or two to normalize. Soy milk may be a good alternative for many.
What to plant? I published an earlier article discussing the virtue of alkalizing foods. This blog is focused on helping our current or future customers to better health, especially those who suffer with colon issues, Gout or Hemorrhoids. So the foods I recommend are from the alkaline side of the food spectrum and will promote optimum colon health while helping with any of the conditions I have mentioned here. A short list of alkaline fruits and vegetables that may supplement possible shortages at your grocery store include:
Apples, beets, broccoli, garlic, celery, endive, melons, spinach, strawberries, Brussels sprouts, watermelon, fresh green beans, parsley, mustard greens, radishes, watercress. turnips, millet, and mint. As a lover of herbs and their medicinal uses, I would recommend basil, fennel, oregano, thyme, and most anything else that can be used for cooking, or for their medicinal properties.
Lest I forget, I really believe that for Hemorrhoids pain and Gout symptoms can be helped by eating cabbage daily, in any of its' forms, cooked, pickled, or eaten fresh. Feel free to check out our products at www.westernherbal.com
