The Importance of Diet, Nutrition, and Farming in the U.S.

More On Diet Relating to Gout Suffering, and Hemorrhoid Symptoms

You have heard it said before, 'we are what we eat.' I would like someone to show me how that may be an inaccurate statement. I'll do my own self correcting; add-in some water, air (oxygen) and sunshine and season to taste. Diet is so important for optimum health, and it has to be a focal point for dealing with people's health issues. Supplementing our diet with vitamins, and key supplements is made necessary by our poor diets and nutrient poor food and produce. In a perfect world, all essential nutrition would be in the food we eat. Many places in the world have food that offers better nutrition than here in America by virtue of farming in better soil or better farming practices. I visit Germany on a fairly regular basis, and most anything you eat there has more flavor. Tomatoes, onions, apples, wheat, and most produce is farmed on a scale that differs from the type of farming and distribution in the U.S. Also, many places in the world practice crop rotation, which can actually put goodness and nutrients back into the soil. In Germany, often local produce ends up in the local markets and grocery stores, less time in transit, fresher produce. The use of fertilizer can force out maximum crop yields per acre, but farming the same land, with the same crop year after year has left many of our soils nutrient poor and hence the need for supplementation. Furthermore, the use of fertilizer year after year can degrade the quality of the soil, and has now reached a plateau in the U.S. where a given acre of crop no longer will give up extra yield for more fertilizer applied.

How does this relate to your health? Let me make a broad statement; we Americans are a nutritionally deficient lot. In 1980, the FDA commissioned a small study with some 200+ people in the study group. The purpose of the study was to determine what percentage of Americans received the minimum nutrition, or the RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance) a standard established by the government just after World War II to address malnutrition in school age children. To the surprise of the FDA, not one person in their study received the minimum daily nutrition. Nobody, Nada. The reason? We all lack perfect digestion, our food is poor in nutrients and nobody has 100% perfect absorption. The importance of all this is that for the average American, there is a strong need for supplementing our diet with vitamins, minerals, and additional supplements to compensate for our ultimate nutritional needs.

Food grown in your own garden likely has higher nutritional value than that purchased at your grocery store. If you add your own compost to your vegetable patch so much the better. Try to focus on buying food of higher nutritional content. Sometimes organic food may be a better choice but a person needs to be discerning. Some organic produce is not worth the extra money. Many vegetables and fruit have few natural predators and require no weedkillers or pesticides to produce a healthy crop.

Gravitating towards a whole foods diet, focusing on fresh fruits, vegetables and mineral rich foods will translate into better health. Eating healthy, and including more vegetables does not have to mean boring mealtimes. There are more online resources offering free recipes, more cook books in publication than at any time in history. Many people become stayed in their weekly menu, not really venturing beyond the food they grew up with, or the meals typically prepared at home. Try preparing a totally unique dish once a week to expand your menu options. Eating a diverse variety of foods is probably a person's best hedge on malnutrition or a deficiency. Pick your foods well, and spend more time shopping in the produce section of your grocery store. Try to focus on the Green stuff as well, spinach, kale, cabbage, and you are sure to help your suffering with Gout, Hemorrhoids or other health problems.
